NCT Preparation

NCT coming up? Pre-test preparation at N80 Auto Centre in Crannagh, near Stradbally, Co. Laois — aimed at getting common fail items sorted before you go.

What we check and prepare

Pre-test checklist (numbered)

A clearer list of general safety and mechanical items a garage can check before your official test. Scope is confirmed when we see the car — this is not a pass promise.

  1. Exterior lights — headlights, sidelights, indicators, brake lights, reverse and number-plate lamps where fitted.
  2. Wipers & washers — blades and washers working; windscreen view not badly obscured.
  3. Horn & basic controls — horn and obvious driver controls operating.
  4. Brakes — pad/disc condition, pedal feel, handbrake operation, and related safety items we can assess. Dedicated repairs: brakes.
  5. Steering & suspension — play, leaks, worn bushes/joints, springs and dampers within what we can inspect. See suspension & steering.
  6. Exhaust & emissions-related items — visible exhaust condition and emissions issues we can address in the workshop; warning lights may need diagnostics.
  7. Under-bonnet fluids & obvious leaks — levels and leaks that affect safe running, often alongside a service.
  8. Battery & electrical basics — secure battery and obvious electrical faults we can work on.
  9. Body & safety-related defects we can see — corrosion or damage that affects safety items within our mechanical remit.
  10. Road-worthiness feel — unusual noises, pulling, or vibration you report, investigated before test day where possible.

Tyre condition and tread depth are common NCT items. We do not supply or fit tyres — use a tyre specialist for that work.

For an educational walk-through of common fail categories and which service page to use, see our NCT common fails guide (also listed on Guides).

Important: We cannot guarantee an NCT pass. The official NCT test centre decides the result. We prepare and repair; we do not run the official test.

After a fail

Bring the fail or advisory report. We can look at items within our mechanical remit — including brake, suspension, steering, exhaust, battery/electrical and general mechanical repairs — and agree a plan before work starts.

Frequently asked questions

Do you do pre-NCT / NCT preparation?

Yes — NCT preparation and NCT pre-test preparation are listed. We check and sort common items: lights, brakes, suspension, emissions-related issues we can address, and safety items within our workshop remit.

Can you guarantee I’ll pass the NCT?

No. No garage can honestly guarantee a pass. The official NCT centre makes the decision. We prepare the car and repair faults; that improves your chances but is not a guarantee.

What if I’ve already failed?

Bring the fail or advisory report. We will assess which items we can repair — brakes, suspension, lights, exhaust and other listed mechanical work — and quote before work proceeds.

Do you carry out the official NCT test on site?

We provide preparation and repairs only. Book the official NCT test separately at an authorised test centre.

How do I book NCT prep?

Call or WhatsApp 085 742 8960 with your reg, test date if known, and any fail sheet. Hours: Mon–Fri 8am–12pm & 1pm–6pm, Sat 9am–1pm, Sun closed.

What’s in the pre-test checklist?

A numbered set of general checks a garage can carry out — lights, wipers, horn, brakes, steering and suspension, exhaust/emissions-related items, fluids/leaks, battery/electrical basics, visible safety defects, and issues you report. We confirm scope on the car. We cannot guarantee a pass. See also our NCT common fails guide.
